Periodontists provide a variety of services including periodontal exams, root planing, scaling and root surface debridement, dental implants, gum grafts, crown lengthening, bone grafting, ridge augmentation, and other gum surgeries.

Quality periodontists provide personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual patient and keep up to date with the latest advancements in periodontal technology and techniques. They also tend to use more precise and minimally invasive techniques which can result in less pain and shorter recovery times.

General dentists are trained to provide a wide range of preventive and restorative dental care, but they typically refer more serious periodontal cases to periodontists.

The process for getting a dental implant typically involves a consultation with a periodontist, the placing of the implant into the jawbone, and then the final placement of the crown, bridge or denture onto the implant. The entire process can take several months to complete.

Gum grafts are a type of soft tissue graft that can involve taking a small piece of tissue from the roof of the mouth and transplanting it to the area of the gums that have receded due to periodontal disease. Gum grafts can help to restore the natural appearance of the teeth and to restore the health of the gums.

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure used to reshape the gum tissue and bone around a tooth to expose more of the tooth structure. It can be used to improve the appearance of a “gummy” smile or to make a tooth easier to restore.

Ridge augmentation is a surgical procedure used to restore the natural contour of the gum line. It involves the placement of new bone material or a bone substitute into the area of the jaw where teeth have been lost due to periodontal disease or trauma.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums, ligaments, and bone that surround and support the teeth. Common signs and symptoms of periodontal disease include red, swollen, tender gums; receding gums; persistent bad breath; and loose teeth.

During periodontal treatment, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation of your oral health, including an assessment of the health of your gums, teeth, and surrounding tissues. Depending on your individual needs, you may receive a deep cleaning, a dental implant, a gum graft, or other treatments. Your periodontist will develop a customized treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs.

The first visit will involve a comprehensive Periodontal examination which will require a review of your health history, full mouth series of X-rays, and Periodontal charting. A first visit does not usually include a cleaning.
